Today, Ainslie defeated Seb Col (FRA) French Match Racing Team/K-Challenge, Adam Minoprio (NZL) ETNZ/BlackMatch and Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Alandia Sailing Team on another flawless day of sailing for the multi medal Olympian. Ainslie and his Team Origin crew of Iain Percy, Christian Kamp and Matt Cornwell have not been able to do as much match racing this as they would have liked however the talented team appear to do it well when they get the opportunity. All of the top two teams in each group automatically moved up to the quarterfinal stage. Joining Ainslie in the quarterfinals in second place at 4-3 is Adam Minoprio. Group 1 is represented by Eric Monnin (SUI) Search.ch in first at 6-1 and Ian Williams (GBR) Team Pindar presented by Argo Group also 6-1. The top two in Group 3 were last year’s Gold cup winner Johnie Berntsson (SWE) Berntsson Sailing Team at 6-1 and 2007 Gold Cup champion Mathieu Richard (FRA) and His French Match Racing Team. The remaining slots in the quarter finals will go to the top two in the repechage round robin which is yet to be completed. The third and fourth finishers in each group made into the six-team round robin that will finish Friday morning. Racing continues Friday at 9:00AM with the last flights of the repercharge followed by quarter final action. -- Talbot Wilson Repechage Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Alandia Sailing Team 1-1 Phil Robertson (NZL) WAKA Racing Team 0-1 Blythe Walker (BDA) 1-1 Damien Iehl (FRA) 1-1 Dave Perry (USA) 0-1 Torvar Mirsky (AUS) 2-0 Group 1 Eric Monnin (SUI) Search.ch 6-1 Ian Williams (GBR) Team Pindar sponsored by Argo Group 6-1 Damien Iehl (FRA) French Match Racing Team 4-3 Torvar Mirsky (AUS) Mirsky Racing Team 4-3 Reuben Corbett (NZL) 3-4 Keith Swinton (AUS) Black Swan Racing 2-5 Ian Evans (USA) 1-6 Robbie Allam (GBR) 1-6 Group 2 Ben Ainslie (GBR) Team Origin 7-0 Adam Minoprio (NZL) Emirates Team New Zealand/BlackMatch Racing 4-3 Dave Perry (USA) 4-3 Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Alandia Sailing Team 4-3 Sebastien Col (FRA) French Match Racing Team/K Challenge 4-3 Rasmus Viltoft (DEN) 3-4 Alvaro Marinho (POR) Seth Sailing Team 2-5 Paula Lewin Crews (BDA) 0-7 Group 3 Johnie Berntsson (SWE) Berntsson Sailing Team 6-1 Mathieu Richard (FRA) French Match Racing Team 6-1 Blythe Walker (BDA) 4-3 Phil Robertson (NZL) WAKA Racing Team 4-3 Mattias Rahm (SWE) Stena Bulk Sailing Team 3-4 Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing 3-4 Charlie Enright (USA) 1-6 Donald Wilson (USA) 1-6 Into The Trade Winds At the latitude of Cape Blanc - this piece of land that marks the boundary between Western Sahara and Mauritania - the sailors hesitate between remaining as long as possible in the right pressure synonymous with speed, and trigger the jibes at the right time to get the nearest to the archipelago of Cape Verde. Stephane Le Diraison (Cultisol - Marins Sans Frontieres) is one advocate of going closer to the Archipelago. His leadership is, this morning, severely threatened by Bertrand Delesne (Entreprendre Durablement) that after extending a long starboard tack towards the African coast, has opened an angle to the wind that brought him and his plan Manuard closer to the direct route. Just behind, the winner of the first stage should be feeling the sharpened appetites of HP Schipman (Maisons de l'avenir Urbatys), Fabien Despres (Soitec) and Thomas Ruyant (Faber France). As well as, Pierre Brasseur (Region Nord Pas de Calais - Ripolin) more west, Nicolas Boidevezi (Defi GDE) under the Saharan coast, Oliivier Avram, Franck Colin, and Matt Trautman. The leading Series Charlie Dalin (cherche sponsor - charliedalin.com) is facing a more complicated situation, he is not yet in the trade wind zone and is even in low wind area. Thus, his yesterday's lead of nearly 50 miles just changed into 28 miles ahead Fabien Sellier (Surfrider Foundation). There is now an exciting fight in the series category with the return of a man isolated in the far East, the Portuguese Francisco Lobato (ROFF TMN). Far behind, we note the departure from la Palma of Maxence Desfeux (Matmut) and Caroline Vieille (Fondation Jerome Lejeune). Simone Gesi's (Dagada) trajectory is suggesting that there is something wrong aboard. Ranking at 5 am: Prototypes : Series :

The previously unreported bust of Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, 53, occurred in June 2005, according to Rochester Police Department documents ( www.thesmokinggun.com ). The sheikh is the crown prince and effective ruler of Ras al-Khaimah, one of the seven emirates comprising the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which includes Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The woman was interviewed by cops at St. Marys Hospital, where a sexual assault kit was completed and later turned over to police. At the conclusion of his interview, the sheikh was arrested. He was handcuffed, placed into a patrol car, and transported to the Adult Detention Center, where he was booked on two counts of felony criminal sexual conduct. His contention that he could not be arrested because of his diplomatic status was rejected by a county prosecutor consulted by police. Records show that Sheikh Saud was released from jail after spending a weekend in custody (he apparently returned immediately to the UAE). About nine months after the sheikh's arrest, prosecutors declined to pursue the case "due to a lack of probable cause," according to police records. The prosecutor's file on the case has been purged, and only a computer entry noting that "prosecution declined" remains, according to an Olmsted County Attorney employee. One investigator involved in the case told TSG (The Smoking Gun) that they believed Sheikh Saud's status as a head of state--not to mention his UAE domicile--played a role in charges not being pursued. See The Smoking Gun: * Organizers of the next edition of the America's Cup, due to be staged in Ras al-Khaimah in February, said on Tuesday they would meet the BMW Oracle team next week to assure them there was no security threat. Khater Massaad, chief executive of the Ras al-Khaimah Investment Authority (RAKIA), said officials from the emirate would meet the California-based team to try and allay any concerns. "The UAE has 10 million tourists a year and millions of Americans and other foreigners live here. There is absolute safety," he said. Massaad dismissed suggestions its proximity to Iran was an issue. "We have no special relationship with Iran," he said. -- John Irish in Reuters, www.reuters.com/article/sportsNews/ TP52 World Championship
The Swedish flagged team are tied on points with local favourites Bribon (ESP). Jose Cusí's crew from the host club, with round the world racer Gonzalo Araujo (ESP) on the helm, also erred on the conservative, safe side where possible and posted a second and a third.. In the flat water, short beats and modest wind-speeds it was day for clear thinking and concise decision making, especially at the busy, often frenetic first windward mark roundings. Artemis' ability to sail clean and fast was outstanding among their virtues today, while Bribon - sailing on their home patch - are clearly quick enough in these 10 knots average breezes and flat water Matador, who were disqualified from Race 2 after a protest, to some extent bounced back today. Though they lead at the windward mark in the first race they could only make an eighth but then went on to win the second race today. They are seeking to have the protest re-opened. The regatta schedule has been altered to allow more windward-leeward racing Friday with the 1.5 points coastal race scheduled for Saturday. -- Sabina Mollart-Rogerson Top Five Overall Standings after Day 2 1. Artemis, SWE, Torbjorn Tornqvist, 14 points Spanish Castle To White Night On the first day the adrenaline was pumping and no one slept much anyway, and by day three the crew was getting into the new rhythm. It was the bit in between that was tough, and on this leg it was not being made any easier by the conditions. Rick Deppe wrote from PUMA ... "My own theory is that people are still recovering from the physical and mental toll taken on them by Leg 5, there's been no real downtime for months now, so being out here and going between zero and three knots is understandably frustrating." Ericsson 4's Kiwi watch captain Stu Bannatyne wrote of his own concerns: "In Rio, there was barely enough time to regain weight, let alone any conditioning or strength lost on the previous leg. "This means that most of the sailors on Leg 6 will still be at sub-optimum physically. Add to this the travelling for the guys that flew home from Rio and it makes for a tough turn around. Extract taken from the Official Volvo Ocean Race Book - packaged together with the official DVD and available for pre-order now at: www.seahorse.co.uk/shop Hints of the New VOR Rule... Excited by the recent news of Giovanni Soldidni's announcement of his Volvo Ocean Race campaign, the Italian public came out in droves to hear from race veterans Knut Frostad, Torben Grael, Grant Dalton and Richard Brisius. Joining them were Carlo Croce, the President of Yacht Club Italiano and Riccardo Bonadeo, the Commodore of Yacht Club Costa Smeralda speaking of their future plans. The event was organised by glossy Italian yachting magazine, Yacht Capital, with Editor, Matteo Zaccagnino conducting the show. Frostad, the Volvo Ocean Race CEO, informed the eager fans that the new Volvo Open 70 rule and Notice of Race would be revealed shortly and hinted at the content of these documents. "Over the last 12 months we have been conducting a project which has shaped the direction of the new Rule and Notice of Race," he said. "We have focused on safety and cost containment and have also spoken in detail to the leading figures in the yachting world. "Cost containment and team expenditure is important for us as last race the budget for a team ranged between the smallest at fewer than 10 million Euros to a speculated 25-30 million Euros. We want a team to be able to have a good solid campaign in the next edition for only 15 million Euros. We want the race to be won on the water in the end. This is very important to us." Huge Support at the Round Britain & Ireland 2010 Launch Veteran sailor Mervyn Wheatley, who competed in the OSTAR 2009 earlier this year, was guest speaker at the event and beguiled the audience with his extraordinary tales of the race. As the 2010 race will be Mervyn's sixth, there seemed no better candidate for this role! Still four months from the entry deadline (31st January 2010), 26 teams have already signed up for the two-handed race, including the winner of the OSTAR 2009, Jankees Lampe. Jankees broke the record for a 40ft vessel when he completed the trans-Atlantic race earlier this year in just 17 days, 17 hours and 40 minutes; making him the one to watch in next year's Shetland Round Britain & Ireland. The race is limited to 50 boats so it is advised that those interested in taking part contact the RWYC soon to avoid disappointment. The Shetland Round Britain & Ireland race has the support of many sailing greats; including Pete Goss MBE. Supporters and 2010 competitors who attended the launch event included Mary Falk, Jerry Freeman and David Southwood (previously race director of OSTAR 2009). The race will depart from Plymouth on 6th June 2010 and see the competitors sail 2000 nautical miles around the UK coastline. The race has been hosted by the Royal Western Yacht Club every four years since 1966. Boxing Kangaroo Heading Home To Australia The Boxing Kangaroo flag that became the symbol of hope for all Australians as Alan Bond and his crew battled for and historically won the America's Cup at Newport, Rhode Island in 1983, is winging its way back to Australia. The original flag, designed and made by the sail makers of Australia II, has been hanging by a broomstick at O'Brien's Pub, the team's designated watering hole, since their arrival in Newport to take on the might of the American's who had won every America's Cup since its inception in 1871. This month, 26 six years after Australia won the America's Cup, Tom Reagan, the owner of O'Brien's, has generously handed the flag back to Australia II crew member, Skip Lissiman, who is contesting the 12 Metre Worlds nostalgically being held on the old stomping grounds off Newport. "The flag belongs at home in Australia," told Lissiman and the assembled crowd in O'Brien's. "On behalf of the Australian Olympic Committee, who now own the emblem, and all Australians, this is fantastic that we can have the original back," said an obviously thrilled Lissiman who in return, handed Reagan a replica signed by nearly the entire original team, including Alan Bond and the boat's famed skipper, John Bertrand. Lissiman said after the original flag was made and mounted in the Newport pub, sailmakers made a second, which they flew from the forestay as the headed out to the race track each day in 1983. That flag helped unite the nation and prompted Prime Minister at the time, Bob Hawke to say on Australian television: "I tell you what; any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum." Ironically, the original flag will go to the Fremantle Maritime Museum in Perth, Western Australia, Lissiman's home town and the place where Bond mounted the Challenge from. First, though, it will undergo the major restoration needed after hanging in O'Brien's for all these years. The flag was last seen being lovingly packed by a curator from the Fremantle Museum. It will accompany Lissiman on his journey home this week. -- Di Pearson, boatingOz www.boatingoz.com.au/default.asp?Page=29624 Short Tacks Richard Langford, RYA Chairman said of her appointment: "Finding someone to fill Rod's shoes was obviously quite a challenge for us. However, Sarah's excellent management experience and leadership skills combined with her own personal recreational boating will be a true asset to the RYA, its members and the boating community as a whole. Sarah will take up the post in February 2010, when she will work alongside the current CEO, Rod Carr OBE, for a month before his retirement in March. Sarah joins the RYA from The Admirable Crichton, a private luxury events company, and has extensive management experience combined with a broad sailing experience from cruising in the south west of England, France, the Channel Islands and further afield to racing in dinghies, yachts and keelboats. Currently, Sarah joint owns a Sigma 33 which she sails on the south coast. -- http://rya.org.uk * Marina da Gloria in Guanabara Bay is the proposed venue for the 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition. The Bay is already well known as a world-class sailing venue: earlier this year it was a stopover venue for the Volvo Ocean Race; whilst in 2007 in was the sailing venue for the Pan American Games. Next year the Star class visits Rio for their World Championship battle. Brazil has a proud record in Olympic sailing, in fact sailing is one of the nation's most successful Olympic sports. Torben Grael is the only sailor to have won five Olympic medals, whilst Robert Scheidt is only one behind with two golds and two silvers. At Beijing 2008 Fernanda Oliveira and Isabel Swan became the first female Brazilian sailors to win an Olympic medal. Brazil also showed its dedication to the future of the sport as it hosted this year's Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship with great success. * Over 100 individuals signed up for the eighth bi-annual Blue Water World Rally which will set sail from Gibraltar on 25 October in what is forecast as an 'El Nino' year. Over the next two years 21 yachts will sail with Blue Water Rallies from Gibraltar to the Caribbean, 32 yachts will cross the pacific and more will join en route. Blue Water Rallies, which started running it's world rally in 1997, will support this fleet of sailors along 23 legs starting in Gibraltar and stopping off in Antigua, Panama, Galapagos, Tonga, Darwin, Phuket, and Djibouti, to name but a few before finally returning to the Mediterranean. The 8th World Rally Dates: * The Sonar Worlds concluded this past weekend, sailing at the Noroton Yacht Club, Darien Connecticut, USA: Final top ten: 1. Dave Franzel, USA, 26 Full results on sonarworlds.org * The International Kiteboarding Association has announced that all future Kiteboard Pro World Tour (KPWT) events are not sanctioned any longer and thus do not count for the world rankings. The KPWT has been in material and persistent breach of the sanctioning agreement between IKA and KPWT, and has failed to remedy this breach after being requested to do so. Therefore the IKA had to terminate the sanctioning agreement with immediate effect to protect the interest of their national members and competitors. All past events of the 2009 season do still count for the world ranking, and competitors are allowed to enter the remaining KPWT events in 2009 without consequences. -- www.internationalkiteboarding.org Letters To The Editor - <!-- var prefix = 'ma' + 'il' + 'to'; var path = 'hr' + 'ef' + '='; var addy56265 = 'editor' + '@'; addy56265 = addy56265 + 'scuttlebutteurope' + '.' + 'com'; var addy_text56265 = 'editor' + '@' + 'scuttlebutteurope' + '.' + 'com'; document.write( '<a ' + path + '\'' + prefix + ':' + addy56265 + '\'>' ); document.write( addy_text56265 ); document.write( '<\/a>' ); //-->\n

<!-- document.write( '<span style=\'display: none;\'>' ); //--> * From Jonathan Crinion: Re: Larry Sevitt's garbage pipe line to the Sahara. I'd say Larry Sevitt's idea of building a pipe lines to dump all our waste in the Sahara and to let the indigenous people deal with it, wins 'Best of the Worst ideas in the World 2009'. Yes dumping waste in the ocean is a massive problem and the people that produce that waste are culpable, should be legally responsible for it and can keep it in their own back yard. Featured Brokerage This Mk I Swan 44 was built in 1990 specifically with the three-cabin layout, which provides more sleeping quarters than the two-cabin version. This modified layout has proved very popular for family sailing providing separate cabins for kids / guests whilst still retaining an excellent saloon with good, comfortable full-length passage berths. She has been fastidiously looked after and as will be seen in the inventory below has many improvements and equipment upgrades. The previous owner had further upgraded the boat for family cruising, occasional racing and she has been fully fitted out for and completed the 2003 ARC (where she finished 31st out of 200+ on corrected time). The current owner has continued to look after her in the same manner with a professional boating service operation locally making sure she is in kept in Swan-like fashion.
