Langenargen, Germany: The top sailing teams from the world of match racing have arrived in Langenargen for Match Race Germany 2012 and four-time World Champion Peter Gilmour used the day's Practice Session to renew an old rivalry with 2002 ISAF World Champion, Karol Jablonski.
Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing returns to Langenargen for the first Alpari World Match Racing Tour event of the year, having narrowly missed out in the Final last year. The addition of fellow former Champion Jablonski (GER/POL) Jablonski Sailing Team, who previously held the World No.1 spot for 18 months, will re-ignite a battle which Jablonski remembers to this day:"I know Peter well and I know that he still adopts his typical aggressive sailing style."
"When I was World Champion in 2002, Peter was racing at the America's Cup, but we both remember the Elba Cup semi-final. I was doing well through the early rounds then lost the semi after a few calls which didn't go our way. It was really a tough and painful way to get knocked out."
Jablonski returns to the Tour after several years pursuing other sailing events. Gilmour welcomed back his old foe: "It's fantastic to have him back on the Tour after all these years and I'm sure he knows that it'll be tough because the level steps up every year. It's an exciting challenge for him which I think he'll embrace."

Europa Warm'up, Virbac Paprec 3 Wins Leg 1
It was as close a finish as many would have wished for, just over seven minutes separating first placed Virbac-Paprec 3 and third placed PRB. Jean Pierre Dick's crew, with back to back Route du Rhum winner Roland Jourdain among them, lead all the way down the Mediterranean only to surrender their lead to PRB at the gateway to the Atlantic, the Strait of Gibraltar. But through the last 24 hours of the 800 miles first stage which started on Saturday in Barcelona, Virbac-Paprec 3 fought back to hold a tiny lead over Francois Gabart and crew on MACIF, with Vincent Riou's PRB taking third.
Crossing the finish line in Cascais, Portugal at 20h 44m 17s (CET, UTC+2hrs) this wednesday 23rd May 2012 Virbac Paprec 3 won Leg 1 of the Europa WarmUp in an elapsed time of 4 days 3 hours 44 mins 17 seconds.
Virbac Paprec 3 finished just ahead of Macif. Francoise Gabart and crew finished at 20h 50m 29s and Vincent Riou and team on PRB finished only 53 seconds behind them in third place.

Fighting To Maintain The Lead In The Global Ocean Race
It's the fourth day of this fifth and final leg of the Global Ocean Race, we are still leading but by rapidly narrowing margin, just 4 miles over Cessna at the last report and it seems highly likely that we'll soon have to hand over our crown, after giving them a good run for their money we are floating helplessly in very light winds and I think they'll finally manage to squeeze past.
After facing tropical storm "Alberto" the first night of the race the weather has changed in a maze of unpredictable winds, the conditions we met very often differed substantially from the forecast. Our tactical choices seemed correct given the available information and we've managed to increase our lead of the identical boats in the fleet, Phesheya and Sec.Hayai, to over a 100 miles.
The difficult navigation of the last few days has made even more memorable the beatiful days spent at the Charleston stopover where we were welcomed very warmly by everyone we met. At our arrival in the heart of the night Sergio Fedelini, Honorary Consul for Italy stayed up till the early hours to welcome us on the committee boat, during the stopover he was of great assistance first of all in treating us to some of the best spaghetti alle vongole i had eaten in years but also with more formal aspects such as organising an event with the italo-american chamber of commerce in our honour and by donating a new italian flag after i learning i had shredded the one i had received from my home town of Torino before the start. My dual nationality, Italian and Slovak doubled the diplomatic welcome in Charleston, I really have to thank the charming Peter Korn, Honorary Consuyl for Slovakia that has hosted us at his house on Daniel's Island for the duration of our stay and hosted a barbeque for the entire Global Ocean Race group.
Both Consuls attended the prize giving at the Charleston Yacht Club which was made very special by the attendance of Slovaks living in South Carolina (including a duet of musicians, the Charleston Virtuosi) and a delegation of representatives of the Slovak Community living in the US who travelled all the way from New York to attend the event. Many thanks to Katerina Tomkova for organising the gathering and the Consul Peter Korn and his assistant Jeremy Stipkala for attending the ceremony.

Line Honours For Nilaya

Filip Balcaen's 112-ft Supermaxi Nilaya (BEL) has claimed line honours at the 2012 Rolex Volcano Race following Leg Two of the offshore race.
Nilaya was the first boat to complete the 300-nautical mile course, arriving to a glorious sunset in Capri, after a challenging voyage through the Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. She arrived at 20:05.06 CEST this evening, completing the race in one day, two hours and six seconds.
It was a hard-fought victory. Following yesterday evening's start in Capri, the race rapidly developed into a classic three-way tussle with Nilaya eventually ousting Claus-Peter Offen's 100-ft Wally Y3K (GER) and Sir Peter Ogden's recently revamped 60-ft Mini Maxi Jethou (GBR). The three crews regularly exchanged positions during an intense contest.
Two crews - Ismec (ITA) and Wild Joe (HUN) - were forced to retire from the race. With eight yachts still out at sea, the overall winner of Leg Two will be revealed in the coming hours. They will be awarded the coveted Rolex Trophy and timepiece during the traditional Rolex party at the iconic La Canzone del Mare, held on Friday 25 May.
Medical Self-Sufficiency in the Vendee Globe
Jean-Yves Chauve, M.D. is a Vendee Globe personality to be reckoned with when it comes to the issues of health and medical care. He is known for his radio assistance of Bertrand de Broc when the French skipper had to stitch his own tongue while sailing south of Australia during the 1992-1993 Vendee Globe. "I gather the medical files sent by each skipper's general physician. We have to keep in mind the yachtsmen's average age is higher than in most other sports. They may be well-trained athletes, they're just not as efficient as they were in their twenties! »
In addition to the skippers' fitness, another element makes a solid prevention effort necessary. "In single-handed races, the skippers push their bodies in a very demanding way. They sometimes have to wake up and rush on the deck for physically exhausting operations, without time to gradually warm up". That creates a context in which a cardiac incident is not unlikely, which prompts the doctor to pay close attention to the cardiac sonograms and the physical test results each skipper includes in his or her medical file.
Vendee Globe competitors have to attend a mandatory training session teaching them the basic elements of medical response. "It is a 26-hour training dealing with what to do in case of fracture, sprain or dental issue as well as how to dress a wound or use stitching glue. It also helps them get more familiar with the first-aid kit. The training doesn't focus on physiology or anatomy but it features simulations of actual accidents. "Because a wrong response is often worse than no response at all", the physician explains.
"Making sure the boat sails fast is good, but the skipper has to be ok too. That's why, for medical care as well as for mechanics, weather forecasts, electronics, communication and computers, Vendee Globe skippers have to be efficient and self-sufficient".
Princess Zahra Aga Khan Godmother of the New Azzurra
Barcelona, Spain: Official christening this morning of the new boat of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, which will see Audi Azzurra Sailing Team involved in the 52 Super Series circuit.
HH Princess Zahra Aga Khan, godmother of the new Azzurra TP52 by Audi, broke the bottle of champagne over the yacht's bow. Earlier, during the private ceremony on the terrace of the Real Club Nautico de Barcelona, the YCCS Commodore, Riccardo Bonadeo, thanked Alberto Roemmers, owner of Azzurra and member of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, for his desire to continue the adventure that began back in1983, when Azzurra was the first Italian challenge for the America's Cup.
The new Azzurra, a project of the Botin Partners design office, had already hit the water last month in Palmavela.
After the official christening, the Audi Azzurra Sailing Team took to the sea for the practice race of the 39tth Trofeo Conde de Godo, where it finished in second place.

Delivering The Right Results

With just under two months to the 18th edition of Cork Week entries are beginning to build momentum. With the Euro 20% down on the pound sterling and promises of better value for competitors. Cork Week is on track to deliver a first class sailing regatta, especially to sailors visiting Ireland's most prestigious yachting regatta from overseas.
A bevy of Cork 1720s are expected for Cork Week and rumour has it that several professional sailors will be making an appearance to take on top Irish competition. In the IRC racing classes, several winning yachts are returning to defend class wins from 2010 including; Paul Kirwin's Sigma 38, Errislannan, who was jointly awarded Cork's top award of Boat of the Week last time out. Conor & Denise Phelan's Kerr 37, Jump Juice will be returning to defend their hard fought class victory in 2010 and a large contingent of Corby Yachts is expected including Richard Goransson's Inga from Sweden with round the world sailor, Matt Humphries calling tactics and four time Volvo Ocean Race veteran, Richard Mason amongst the crew.
There are many people attracted to Crosshaven during the regatta who do not get out on the water and the Cork Festival will give the event village a more interesting agenda for them and the racing crews at the end of the day. A large exhibition tent has been earmarked for the festival, which takes place on the first weekend of Cork Week. Plans include a whale workshop, an aquarium touch tank and other attractions. The festival will also host cultural and artistic flavours of the region including the work of local artists and vendors of local fayre.
"It is still a 5 course Dinner for 2012! Desert on the final day will be the Harbour Course for all and the possibility of a start line from one of the three historic forts of Cork Harbour." IRC Small Boat Championship
The Solent IRC Owners' Association is teaming up with Hamble River SC to launch this new event for 2012.
For some years, owners of small racing yachts have complained about the lack of good racing opportunities. When they try racing in mixed fleets, they tend to get over-shadowed by the larger boats which take all the wind and spoil the racing. So this event has been designed specifically for IRC boats of less than 35 feet overall and an IRC rating below 0.960 (generally Class 3 and below). The event has been scheduled for a weekend of neap tides, when the fleet should have the Solent plateau to itself.
IRC Small Boat Championship: July 14/15th 2012
Up to 3 races are planned for Saturday and two for Sunday. Entries will be divided into classes with courses designed to fit the needs of each class, supervised by internationally qualified race officers.
Post-racing socialising will be hosted at Hamble River SC on the Saturday evening and at the prize giving on Sunday afternoon, with mooring facilities available from the Hamble Harbourmaster.
This new event is generating a buzz around the Solent, with 9 confirmed entries already, and another 9 have registered an interest. Entry fee £50

Volvo Gill Optimist Inland Championships

Over 300 young sailors battled it out this weekend at the annual Volvo Gill Optimist Inland Championships. In typical British summer style the sun didn't quite reach Grafham Water Sailing Club, but instead sailors were faced with a tricky day with just 5-8 knots of breeze to open the event.
There were a record number of black flags in the first two races of the day, keeping the race committee on their toes. To the sailors delight, the wind filled in by race three on Saturday and remained a constant 12-14 knots for the duration of Sunday. Principle Race Officer David Campbell-James commented "Saturday was very difficult especially for those with less experience, but Sunday was perfect conditions with 10-14 knots, racing got underway without a hitch and we had 6 great races." With the forecast set for close to no wind all weekend, the actual conditions allowed 11 races to be completed by the Regatta fleet and 12 races by the Main fleet.
In the Main fleet Optimist European Team member David Labrouche, 14, from Dabchicks Sailing Club took an early lead and stayed dominant to go onto win the event.
The girls displayed equally impressive talent with the main competition between European Team members Jenny Cropley (RLymYC) and Sarah Norbury (South Staffs SC). At the end of day one only three points separated the pair with Jenny just taking the advantage. Jenny pulled out all the stops in the last race of the event scoring a second place, securing her position in the final results as first girl and 3rd overall.
The regatta fleet were also put to the test this weekend with the tricky conditions. Haydn Sewell, 9, (Royal Victoria Yacht Club, Isle of Wight) dominated with a confident lead through to the final day winning his first event. Second place was Phoebe Le Marquand, 10 (St Catherine's) and Poole Yacht Club's James Foster finished the event in third.
The next UK National event on the Optimist calendar is the Volvo Gill National Open British Championships, to be held at Pwllheli Sailing Club from 13th -17th August 2012, attracting around 500 Optimist sailors from around the globe.
